Finding an idea for your next startup is tough and is something I've been struggling with quite a lot recently. I've got several ideas for my new startup but have not yet committed to pursuing any of them.

Why? Is it because the ideas are not good enough? That's certainly part of the reason. But there is another element to it. For me at least, it's tough to decide what I want to dedicate your time, money and focus on. What if I pick a bad idea? What if I fail immediately? Some good advice for countering this is to fail hard and to fail fast. Stop thinking about starting a startup and just start one! Build a startup fast- if it fails then great! You can try again after failing and learning from your mistakes.

But how do you get these ideas in the first place? For me, it's a combination of methods.

1. Social media: Twitter, Reddit, Discord... are some of my favourite places to find ideas. Surround yourself with a supportive, interesting and intelligent community to find incredible ideas. I really enjoy Twitter- there are so many interesting people working on a huge variety of projects. It really is so inspiring!

2. Youtube, podcasts, articles and other digital content: there are so many ideas floating around on the internet. Read articles, watch videos, listen to podcasts, read books and absorb as much knowledge as you can. You'll find that simply learning from others' content can give you inspiration for your next startup.

3. Other tech platforms: Github, Product Hunt...: try to look at others' projects, see what they are doing successfully and how their project can be improved. Are there any similar products you could create?

4. Ask people! What is your biggest problem as a startup owner? What is the most boring task you do each day? You can find huge value in simply talking to people, whether in person, on Zoom, on Twitter...

Collate all your ideas into one document, select the top 10 ideas, look at those in more detail and then select just 3. For each of these ideas make a mini pitch deck and present it to family, friends or other connections. Get feedback, validate your ideas and see if there is a genuine need for your startup.

How to find a startup idea

Starting a start-up can be exciting, challenging, morale building and frustrating all at the same time. But, if you want to build something that will grow into a successful business, you have to find a way to grow your start-up without burning yourself out. Here are some tips.

## Set reasonable metrics

Every business owner wants to grow their company and achieve success as soon as possible. It’s something that’s on the top of everyone’s mind. But what many fail to realize is that growing fast doesn’t necessarily mean growing well. Setting business goals and making sure that these goals are reasonable is of the utmost importance for both you and your startup.

## Don't overwork yourself

At some point in your startup journey, you will be tempted to spend almost every waking moment on your business. And while working hard and eating up as much of your time as possible can be an effective strategy, it can also lead to burn-out. The last thing you'll want is to not have enough physical or emotional energy to carry out all the tasks that are important for your business. So before you take on all the necessary work for building a successful business, consider getting the rest you need to continue engaging in productively and efficiently.

## Know when you need to take a break

Start-up founders are a special breed. In addition to possessing all the traits of an entrepreneur and running a business, you’re also designing your own job and environment. While this can be one of the most rewarding experiences in work, it can also be one of the most painful if you don’t know when to dial it back. Knowing when it is time to take a break is absolutely critical.

If you're a bootstrapper, you probably don't have a lot of cash to spend on your business. So taking care of yourself is probably one of your highest priorities because you simply cannot afford to burn yourself out! But how do you know when you need to take a break? And how can you be productive and enjoy what you're doing at the same time?

## Take time away from work for yourself

When you are working hard on your start-up, it's easy to get burned out. Taking breaks and making time for yourself can make all the difference - to both your startup and to your sanity. Be clear on your priorities and make sure they are sensible. Do not forget to prioritise your health!

## Conclusion

Our society encourages us to push ourselves to our limits, but we need to take some time for ourselves so that we don’t end up burning out and/or going insane! Happy entrepreneurs take care of themselves. Those who burn out will not be able to successfully grow their businesses. The whole business world is watching and waiting for the next big thing. Will your business fail before it ever really gets anywhere? Or can you build a company that will keep growing strong? The choice is yours.

How To Grow Your Startup Without Burning Yourself Out

As the world develops at a speed faster then ever before jobs have to keep up in order for the world to continue at this rate. Since 1990, the increase of STEM jobs has increased 79% and is continuing to grow at a rapid rate. The annual wage for tech jobs is approximately $86,000 according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, whereas the average US wage is approximately $56,000 according to the May 2020 National Occupational Employment and Wages.

However there are many technology jobs, some more high paying than others. (This list is not in order).

## 1. Web Developer

- Average Annual Wage: approximately $73,000

Web developers create and maintain websites, helping increasing retail sales by 36 percent in 2020. Websites provide education, entertainment and provide services for people around the world, and help the approximately 4.66 billion people who use the internet.

What is required to become a web developer?

- HTML/CSS skills
- Javascript skills
- Basic knowledge of backend

It takes approximately 6 months to a year to learn web development with no prior knowledge.

## 2. Data Analyst

- Average Annual Wage: approximately $69,500

Data analysts organize and understand data in order to make strategic decisions for the benefit of an organization. Analysis organized by data analysts is used around the world, and is used for key decisions for business, calculating the probability of having an illness and so many more.

What is required to become a data analyst?

- Python skills
- R skills
- Knowledge of SQL
- Data visualisation

It takes approximately a year to a year and half to learn data analysis with no prior knowledge.

## 3. AI (Artificial Intelligence) Engineer

- Average Annual Wage: approximately $114,000

AI engineers use machine learning algorithms to create AI systems. AI systems are used all the time in daily life, providing services, entertainment, organization, education and communication. Many examples include: reminders, smart assistants, autocorrect, social media and smartphones.

What is required to become an AI engineer?

- Programming skills (Python is most commonly used)
- Calculus
- Linear Algebra
- Computer science fundamentals

It takes approximately 6 to 8 months to learn the fundamentals of AI engineering.

## 4. Backend Engineer

- Average Annual Wage: approximately $127,000

Backend engineers have many responsibilities, primarily building the structure of a software application. Others may include QA (Quality Assurance) testing, troubleshooting/debugging and integrating with front end engineers.

What is required to become a backend engineer?

- Python skills
- Java skills
- SQL skills

It takes approximately a year to learn the fundamentals of a backend engineering.

## 5. Java Developer

- Average Annual Wage: approximately $70,000

Java developers are responsible for the design and maintenance of Java based applications. Some of these real world applications include science, web, enterprise, apps and mobile applications. 

What is required to become a java developer?

- Java skills
- Backend skills

It takes approximately two years to become a java developer.

In conclusion, all of the top five tech jobs are programming. While there are so many other non-programming jobs, this is just a list of the top five tech jobs.
